Mariposa Afternoons: Ferdowsi, the Persian Homer: Mariposa Afternoons will host Ferdowsi, the Persian Homer presented by Dr. Olga M. Davidson.
Time: 2:00pm Town: Peterborough
[More Information]
Mariposa Afternoons will host Ferdowsi, the Persian Homer presented by Dr. Olga M. Davidson.
The biographical stories about Ferdowsi, poet of the Persian epic known as the Shâhnâma or "Book of Kings," can be studied in comparison with corresponding biographical stories about Homer, poet of the Iliad and Odyssey.
Such stories are often dismissed because they are myths, but these myths provide a wealth of historical information about the reception of the poetry that they are designed to explain.
Using a comparative approach, this talk will explore the similarities between Ferdowsi and Homer as poetic figures who represent the highest forms of verbal art in their respective civilizations.
Dr. Olga Davidson is President of the Board of the Ilex Foundation, author of the book, Poet and Hero in the Persian Book of Kings, and is on the faculty at Boston University.
Admission: This event is free and open to the public. 2 PIANOS 4 HANDS – July 10 – 21
A play with music by Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt
As children, Ted and Richard don’t have much in common – except for the shared desire to become classical pianists. But does either of them have what it takes? 2 Pianos 4 Hands follows the dynamic and comical journey of two boys into adulthood, their musical aspirations gleaming like the grand pianos that they play masterfully on stage from beginning to end. Players favorite Tom Frey returns to star in this hit from the 2010 season, which tops the list of most-requested revivals.

Amos Fortune Forum: MAXIMILIAN L. FERRO: Why Historic Preservation?
Time: 8:00pm Town: Jaffrey Center
[More Information]
The Amos Fortune Forum lectures are held in the Meetinghouse located in
Historic Jaffrey Center, 2 miles west of downtown Jaffrey, NH on State Route 124.
Fridays Promptly At 8:00 P.M.
There is no charge for admission.
The Amos Fortune Forum was organized in 1946 to take advantage of the many widely known speakers on subjects of public interest and importance who live in and visit the Monadnock region. It was felt that most people would welcome the opportunity to cooperate in this Forum, each talking on whatever subject he or she considered most interesting and timely. Thus this small community might make a substantial contribution to the intellectual life of our country.
These talks on topics of current interest carry on the discussions held more than two centuries ago in this same Meetinghouse, when the foundations of our republic were being established by men and women who struggled for freedom and for human dignity. The enthusiastic response of the individuals who have been invited to address the Forum reflects a similar spirit. Furthermore, the lectures are a continuing tribute to Amos Fortune – one of Jaffrey’s most distinguished citizens – given without compensation by members of the Monadnock community, their relatives and friends.
The Amos Fortune Forum, now in its 64th season, is free to the public. Operating expenses are partially offset by a generous annual bequest from the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Charitable Foundatioon, as well as by contributions from residents of the Monadnock Region. Amos Fortune Forum: SAM KENNEDY: The Business of Baseball – An Inside Look at Running the Red Sox
LAUGHING STOCK – August 7 – 18
A backstage farce by Charles Morey
A hilarious comedy and genuinely affectionate look into the world of the theatre. When The Playhouse, a rustic New England summer theatre (any resemblance to the
Peterborough Players is purely coincidental, of course), schedules a repertory season of Dracula, Hamlet and Charley's Aunt, comic mayhem ensues. We follow the well-intentioned but over-matched company from outrageous auditions, to ego-driven rehearsals, through opening nights gone disastrously awry, to the elation of a great play well told and the comic and nostalgic season close. Chuck
Morey, former Artistic Director of the Peterborough Players, (who directed last season’s The 39 Steps) returns to direct this big hit from the 2004 season.
Curtain times: 7PM Tues, 8PM Wed–Sat, and 4PM Sundays

Amos Fortune Forum: ROBERT PUTNAM: The Opportunity Gap: Reviving the American Dream
River Valley Artisan Tour: Self-guided art tour through the Connecticut River Valley
Time: 10-4 Town: Westmoreland
[More Information]
The River Valley Artisans Tour is a cooperative event scheduled for Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 12 and 13 from 10:00-4:00 each day. Travel the scenic back roads of Southern New Hampshire/Vermont in the Connecticut River Valley during our peak foliage season while enjoying the work of local artists and artisans in their studios. This self-guided tour encompasses the towns of Bellows Falls, VT, Chesterfield, Spofford, Walpole and Westmoreland, NH. There will be a group of artists exhibiting together in the Westmoreland Town Hall, centrally located on Route 63 in Westmoreland. Start your tour here to obtain a map and see samples of the work from each artist participating in the tour. From here you may plan your trip to be as extensive or as brief as you like, taking in spectacular autumn foliage everywhere. Don’t forget to bring your camera! There will be studios exhibiting hand-made baskets, paintings, sculpture, naturally dyed yarns, glass blowing, wood turning & jewelry along with local vineyards and all will have many items for sale. Consider coming to our preview on Friday evening, October 11 from 7-9 PM at the Westmoreland Town Hall. Pick up your map, plan your weekend and possibly take advantage of some Early Bird specials.
