Farm & Food in the Monadnock Region

If you are traveling in the Monadnock Region, you will definitely want to get a taste of life on the farm. The Monadnock Region of New Hampshire is characterized by a thriving community of farms, markets, wineries, and so much more. Something about life in the country just fills the soul. From the pleasure of feeling a fresh, sun-warmed blueberry burst in your mouth, to the joy of holding a tiny baby chick in your hands, it truly is the “little things” that add color to life here.

Several of the area’s functioning farms welcome visitors for an amazing, up-close and personal look at farm animals both big and small. Get to know some of the local sheep, whose silly and sweet expressions always make for a fun visit. Or, try your hand at milking during a tour of one of the cow or goat farms nearby. If you are an animal lover, you will find plenty of furry friends here.

Who knows, you might even run into an animal or two at the local farmers’ market, where you can find foods harvested straight from the garden, as well as one-of-a-kind artisanal wares. Sprinkled throughout the towns surrounding Mount Monadnock, these lively markets act as hubs for growers, makers, and artists. They are the perfect place to hear live music, chat with locals, browse unique crafts, and nosh on scrumptious pastries, breads, and produce.

One taste of the region’s locally-grown fruits will have you hooked and hankering for the pick-your-own experience! Head straight to the farm to pluck fresh berries and fruits from the seemingly endless rows of juicy crops. Whether you crave strawberries or blueberries through summer, or peaches and apples in autumn, tasting fruit fresh from the fields is the way it is meant to be enjoyed.

As you drive back to your inn, B&B, or hotel, make a point of stopping by one of the region’s surprising number of wineries, breweries, and distilleries for a taste and a tour. There are so many interesting flavors to try, from cranberry wine to handcrafted bourbon.

Oftentimes, you can step behind the scenes for a look at the impressive work that goes into each glass. Become part of the story by stomping grapes as you look out over the hills of vines, or be one of the few to savor a limited-run, local brew. It is all here just waiting for you to come and make the memories!
