McCabe Forest features a wide variety of habitats that lend to excellent wildlife observation opportunities in this small pine, oak, and hemlock nature preserve of only 189 acres. There are two miles of lightly trafficked, easy, flat, out-and-back trails that meander through forests, fields, orchards, and near the Contoocook River and wetlands. There is extensive river frontage resulting in numerous wildflowers and occasional flooding, especially in the spring. A small parking lot on the east side of Route 202 has a kiosk with a posted hiking map. Be sure to take a photo of the map because the yellow trail blazes are difficult to locate in some places. Leashed dogs are welcomed.
